California is an example of this. The cost to register a vehicle in California is $46. Additional fees are assessed based upon the vehicle type, county of residence, driving record of the registrar, type of license plate ordered, and type of vehicle.

The two-year registration fee in New York is based on the vehicle's weight. The cost of registering a vehicle or truck that is heavier will be higher. Depending on the location of the vehicle, additional taxes and fees may be added.

What does a car registration look like?

The vehicle registration card is very similar to the driver's licence you keep in your pocket. However, it contains information about both you and your car.

Here are some examples of what you will find on a typical vehicle identification card. (And yes, your license is always required while driving.)

  • Your full name and address.
  • The car's Title ID number
  • The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) (See also our VIN Lookup Page)
  • Number of the license plate
  • Year and make (e.g. Honda Accord).

The expiration date of the current vehicle registration.
